🩺 Clinical relevance

The pterion is the thinnest part of the skull — a blow here can tear the middle meningeal artery (extradural haematoma).
Skull-base fractures can injure the cranial nerves passing through the foramina.
The atlanto-axial joint allows head rotation; injury there threatens the cervical spinal cord.

👩‍🏫 Teaching tip: Rotate to the skull base and ask students to name each foramen and the structure passing through it.

The adult skeleton has 206 bones; a newborn has more, which later fuse.
Weight-bearing long bones (femur, tibia) are common fracture sites.
Osteoporosis weakens trabecular bone — the classic fractures are hip, wrist (Colles') and vertebrae.

👩‍🏫 Teaching tip: Use it to contrast the male and female pelvis, or to trace how load passes from spine to legs.

Each hip bone fuses from the ilium, ischium and pubis at the acetabulum.
The male pelvis is narrower and heavier, with a narrow (< 70°) subpubic angle.
The bony pelvis protects the bladder, rectum and reproductive organs.

The female pelvis is adapted for childbirth — a wider inlet, rounder brim and wider subpubic angle.
The true pelvis is the birth canal; its diameters matter in labour.
This is reconstructed from a real female MRI — most 'female' models are merely adapted from male data.

The Bones of the Hand

🩺 Clinical relevance

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal — tender in the anatomical snuffbox.
A scaphoid fracture risks avascular necrosis, because its blood supply enters from the distal end.
The carpal tunnel transmits the median nerve; compression there causes carpal tunnel syndrome.

👩‍🏫 Teaching tip: Use it to locate the scaphoid and explain why a missed fracture is dangerous.

The Bones of the Foot

The calcaneus (heel bone) is the most commonly fractured tarsal — often after a fall from height.
The talus transmits body weight from the tibia to the foot.
The arches act as shock absorbers; their collapse causes flat feet (pes planus).

👩‍🏫 Teaching tip: Ask students to trace how body weight passes from the tibia, through the talus, to the ground.

Count them as 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar (like meals: breakfast 7, lunch 12, dinner 5).
An intervertebral disc can herniate and press on a nerve root — causing sciatica.
Exaggerated curves: scoliosis (lateral), kyphosis (hunchback) and lordosis (sway-back).

The Knee Joint

The ACL stops the tibia sliding forward — a common sports injury (a 'pop' then swelling).
The 'unhappy triad' is injury to the ACL, the medial collateral ligament and the medial meniscus.
The knee is a hinge joint that also allows a little rotation when flexed.

👩‍🏫 Teaching tip: Explain the anterior drawer test and ask which ligament it checks (the ACL).

A muscle's action follows its fibre direction, from origin to insertion.
Intramuscular injections target large muscles — deltoid, gluteus medius, vastus lateralis.
Wasting of a muscle points to a lower-motor-neuron lesion of its nerve supply.

The motor and sensory cortices are mapped somatotopically — the 'homunculus'.
Broca's aphasia is non-fluent, effortful speech; Wernicke's is fluent but meaningless.
The occipital lobe processes vision — a stroke there causes a homonymous hemianopia.

The Spinal Cord & Cauda Equina

In the adult the cord ends at about L1/L2 — below that lies the cauda equina.
A lumbar puncture is done below L2 (usually L3/L4) to avoid the spinal cord.
Cauda equina syndrome (saddle anaesthesia, bladder dysfunction) is a surgical emergency.

👩‍🏫 Teaching tip: Ask why a lumbar puncture is safe at L3/L4 but not higher.

The left ventricle wall is the thickest — it pumps against systemic pressure.
Blockage of a coronary artery causes a myocardial infarction; the LAD is nicknamed the 'widow-maker'.

The right main bronchus is wider, shorter and more vertical — inhaled objects tend to lodge there.
Gas exchange happens across the thin walls of the alveoli.
Air in the pleural space is a pneumothorax; fluid there is a pleural effusion.

The vocal folds stretch between the thyroid and arytenoid cartilages — they vibrate to make voice.
The epiglottis guards the airway during swallowing; failure risks aspiration.
The cricothyroid membrane is the landmark for an emergency surgical airway (cricothyroidotomy).

The Liver

The liver — the body's largest internal organ.

The liver has a dual blood supply — the hepatic artery (oxygen) and the portal vein (gut blood).
It sits in the right hypochondrium; when enlarged (hepatomegaly) it is felt below the costal margin.
Bile made here drains through the bile ducts to the duodenum; obstruction causes jaundice.

The nephron is the functional unit — it filters, reabsorbs and secretes.

The prostate surrounds the urethra — enlargement (BPH) obstructs urine flow in older men.

It moves up on swallowing — a key sign that a neck lump is thyroid.
It makes T3/T4 (metabolism); the parathyroids behind it control calcium.

The Inner Ear

Organ relationships explain referred pain — e.g. diaphragmatic irritation felt at the shoulder tip.
The peritoneum defines intra- versus retro-peritoneal organs, which matters in surgery.
This atlas follows the latest Terminologia Anatomica (TA2), the official anatomical nomenclature.
