How to reduce plagiarism in medical writing

Eight habits that keep your papers original and reviewer-ready.

  1. 1

    Understand, then write

Read the source, close it, and write the idea in your own words from memory. Copying while looking at the text is how most accidental plagiarism happens.

  2. 2

    Paraphrase properly

Change both the sentence structure and the wording β€” not just a few synonyms. Then still cite the source: a paraphrase without a citation is still plagiarism.

  3. 3

    Cite every borrowed idea

Any fact, statistic, figure or claim that isn't your own or common knowledge needs a reference (AMA / Vancouver style for most medical journals).

  4. 4

    Quote sparingly and mark it

When exact wording matters, use quotation marks and cite the page. Keep direct quotes short β€” reviewers expect analysis in your own voice.

  5. 5

    Avoid self-plagiarism

Reusing your own previously published text without citing it counts as plagiarism too. Cite your earlier papers just like any other source.

  6. 6

    Track sources as you go

Use a reference manager (Zotero, Mendeley or EndNote) from the first draft so every borrowed idea already has its citation attached.

  7. 7

    Attribute figures and tables

Don't reuse copyrighted figures or tables without permission and credit. Redraw or recreate data with a clear source line.

  8. 8

    Run the official checker last

Before you submit, run your institution's licensed tool (Turnitin / iThenticate). This page helps you clean up first β€” it is not a substitute for that database check.

Educational tool only. The AI assessment is a heuristic guide, not a database match, and does not guarantee your work will pass any institutional plagiarism checker. Your drafts are sent to the AI provider only when you press β€œCheck” or β€œRewrite”; the source-comparison runs entirely in your browser.
