Carcinoma of the Stomach

Cancer of the stomach lining, often found late because its early symptoms are vague, with a generally poor outlook.

Most stomach cancers are adenocarcinomas arising from the gland cells of the stomach lining.
Risk is raised by long-standing Helicobacter pylori infection, smoked and salted foods, smoking and certain premalignant changes.
Early symptoms are vague, such as indigestion, loss of appetite and weight loss, so it is often found late.
It spreads to lymph nodes, and a node above the left collarbone (Virchow's node) can be a sign of advanced disease.
It may spread across the abdomen and, in women, to the ovaries (a Krukenberg tumour), which worsens the outlook.
