Three heart-muscle patterns: Dilated (stretched, weak pump; alcohol/viral), Hypertrophic (thick, inherited; sudden death in athletes), Restrictive (stiff, cannot fill; amyloid).
Atherosclerosis
A chronic disease in which lipid plaques build up within artery walls.
Embolism
A detached intravascular mass (solid, liquid or gas) carried to a distant site.
Infarction
Tissue necrosis caused by loss of blood supply (ischaemia).
Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease
An immune complication that can follow a throat infection with group A streptococcus, in which cross-reacting immune responses damage the heart, joints and other tissues.
Aneurysms
An abnormal, permanent bulging of a blood vessel wall (or the heart), which can leak, burst or throw off clots.
