Reading a Chest X-ray

The commonest radiograph — a systematic read avoids missed findings.

Key points

Check quality first, then read airway, breathing (lungs), cardiac, diaphragm and the edges/bones.
Air is black, bone and metal are white.
Look for consolidation, effusion, pneumothorax and a widened mediastinum.

Quality = RIPE (Rotation, Inspiration, Penetration, Exposure); then read A-B-C-D-E.
