The clavicle is the easiest bone in the box to identify and the one students most often hand back with the wrong side. It is the only bony strut between the upper limb and the axial skeleton, it is the first bone in the body to start ossifying and the last epiphysis to fuse, and it is the only long bone that is horizontal. Do not describe it before you have turned it the right way up: the rough, grooved surface goes downwards.
Hold it like this first: Hold it horizontally with the flattened end laterally, the rounded end medially, the rough grooved surface downwards, and the convexity of the medial two-thirds facing forwards.
Check 1 — Compare the two ends
One end is rounded and quadrangular, the other is flattened from above downwards
The flattened end is the acromial end and points to the side the bone belongs to
Check 2 — Read the curves of the shaft
The medial two-thirds is convex forwards, the lateral third concave forwards
With the convexity forwards, the lateral third sweeps back towards its own shoulder
Check 3 — Feel the two surfaces
One surface is smooth, the other carries a groove for subclavius and rough markings near the lateral end
The rough, grooved surface is inferior, so the bone can only lie one way up

Inferior surface, running forwards and laterally from the conoid tubercle
Gives attachment to the trapezoid part of the coracoclavicular ligament.
Subclavian groove
Along the inferior surface of the middle third
Lodges subclavius, which cushions the subclavian vessels from a fractured shaft.

Anchors the medial end to the first rib and limits elevation of the shoulder.
