Surface marking is the one topic students memorise blindly and then cannot reproduce, because they learned the line instead of the landmarks. So here you never draw a line. You place points on things you can feel — and the line draws itself.
4 structures · 11 palpable landmarks · 11 points to place · 20 viva questions
01
Position
Set the limb the way the marking is described in.
02
Feel
Find each landmark on yourself — the coach tells you how.
03
Place
Tap the points in order; the line joins itself.
04
Score
Every point is checked against where it truly sits.
There is a blind mode too, with the landmark names hidden. That is what the examiner will actually ask for.
The arm is abducted to a right angle with the palm facing forwards, which is how every one of these markings is described. In this position the lateral border of the limb is uppermost and the medial border lies below.
The first 2 structures are open to everyone; the rest need a free account. 9 more from the syllabus are still being drawn — the lower limb, thorax, abdomen and head and neck each need their own outline, and we would rather author those properly than trace someone else's.
