Also known as: seizure disorder Β· recurrent seizures
A tendency to recurrent unprovoked seizures. Diagnosis is largely clinical (a good witnessed account) and classification (focal vs generalised) guides drug choice; most people become seizure-free on a single well-chosen anti-seizure medication.
Any age (bimodal β young and elderly); causes include genetic, structural (stroke, tumour, trauma, malformation), infective (neurocysticercosis β important in India) and metabolic.
Prevent recurrent seizures
Caution: Valproate is highly teratogenic β avoid in women of childbearing potential.
