A low serum potassium — usually from losses or intracellular shift. It risks arrhythmia; replace potassium, correct magnesium, and treat the cause.
GI losses (vomiting, diarrhoea), renal losses (diuretics, hyperaldosteronism), drugs, insulin/beta-agonists (shift), and poor intake.
Mild–moderate deficit
Severe/symptomatic
Caution: NEVER give undiluted IV push; respect maximum infusion rates.
