A common primary headache — recurrent, moderate-to-severe, often unilateral throbbing pain with nausea and light/sound sensitivity, sometimes preceded by an aura. The diagnosis is clinical once red flags are excluded.
Common, more in women; a family history is usual; triggers include stress, sleep change, hormones/menstruation, fasting, some foods and dehydration.
Abort an attack
Caution: Avoid triptans in uncontrolled vascular disease; limit acute-drug days to prevent overuse headache.
