A sexually (and vertically) transmissible infection by Treponema pallidum — a painless genital ulcer (chancre) in primary disease, a rash including palms and soles in secondary, then latency and destructive tertiary disease. It is curable with penicillin.
Sexually active people; higher risk with HIV/other STIs, multiple partners and men who have sex with men; congenital syphilis passes from an infected mother.
Stage-dependent treatment
Caution: Essential in pregnancy — desensitise if allergic; warn of Jarisch–Herxheimer.
Alternative — NOT in pregnancy
