The simple idea (no memorising)
Picture dopamine as a chemical messenger used along several different "roads" in the brain, each with its own job. Antipsychotic medicines lower dopamine's signal.
- On the road tied to hallucinations and delusions, turning it down helps — the voices and fears settle.
- But the same medicine also reaches roads that control movement (so it can cause stiffness or restlessness) and hormones (so it can affect periods or milk production).
That's the key insight: one action, many effects, because the messenger is used in many places.

Two families
- First‑generation ("typical") — stronger dopamine block → more movement side‑effects.
- Second‑generation ("atypical") — often gentler on movement, but several can cause weight gain and changes in blood sugar and fats (so the whole body is monitored).

Why it matters
Prescribing isn't "give a pill, problem solved." A good doctor watches the whole person: is it working? any stiffness or restlessness? weight, sugar, heart, energy, and — most of all — is the treatment something the person can actually live with?
