A picture for your mind
Someone who normally sleeps 7 hours now sleeps 2–3 and says "I don't need sleep." They talk non‑stop, start five projects at once, spend wildly, and become convinced they have extraordinary powers. That's the territory of mania.
The simple idea
Think: Mania = Mood + Energy + Activity + Loss of control. The mood can be euphoric or intensely irritable. Watch for: racing thoughts, non‑stop talking, grand plans, impulsive spending or risk‑taking, and overflowing confidence.
A clue people miss: "decreased need for sleep"
This is different from insomnia:
- Insomnia: "I want to sleep but can't." (and feels exhausted)
- Decreased need for sleep: "I slept 3 hours and feel amazing." (this points toward mania)
| Insomnia | Decreased need for sleep | |
|---|---|---|
| The feeling | "I want to sleep but can't" | "I slept 3 h and feel amazing" |
| Next day | exhausted | full of energy |
| Points to | many causes | mania / hypomania |
Mania vs hypomania
Same kind of state, different intensity:
- Hypomania — milder, shorter (a few days), noticeable but not wrecking life, no psychosis.
- Mania — severe, longer (about a week+), can seriously damage life, and can include psychosis.
| Hypomania | Mania | |
|---|---|---|
| Severity | milder | severe |
| Duration | a few days | about a week+ |
| Damage to life | not wrecking it | can seriously damage |
| Psychosis | never | can occur |
Why it matters 🚨
Mania can be dangerous — reckless spending, risky behaviour, dangerous driving, aggression. So don't ask only "is the person happy?" Ask "what has changed, and what are the consequences?"
