The simple idea
A panic attack comes on suddenly: pounding heart, chest tightness, breathlessness, dizziness, tingling, and a wave of terror — "I'm dying," "I'm losing control." It peaks fast and then settles.
The panic cycle (why it feeds itself) 🔁
This is a beautiful example of mind and body looping:
The person becomes frightened by the sensations that fear itself creates. Understanding this breaks the loop: the feelings are horrible, but they are not a catastrophe.
Attack vs disorder
- Panic attack = a single episode (can happen in many conditions, even in healthy people under stress).
- Panic disorder = recurrent, unexpected attacks plus ongoing worry about the next one or a change in behaviour to avoid them.
A safety note 🚨
Chest pain, breathlessness, and a racing heart can also be a heart or lung emergency. Doctors never say "it's just panic" until they've made sure the body is safe. A psychiatric label must never become an excuse to skip a medical check.
Quick check ✅
- Does one panic attack mean panic disorder?
- In the panic cycle, what is the person actually becoming frightened of?
