The simple idea
Through the night the brain cycles: NREM ↔ REM, over and over.
- NREM ("quiet" sleep) deepens through light stages into deep slow‑wave sleep (N3) — the most restorative.
- REM (Rapid Eye Movement) is where vivid dreaming happens: the brain is active, but the body's muscles are switched off (a natural paralysis that stops you acting out dreams).
| NREM | REM | |
|---|---|---|
| Character | "quiet" sleep, deepens to slow‑wave | dreaming sleep |
| Body | some movement | muscles switched off |
| Brain | slower | active |
| Linked to | sleepwalking, night terrors | nightmares, dream‑enactment |
Why this matters
Different sleep problems live in different stages. For example: sleepwalking happens in deep NREM sleep; nightmares happen in REM. Learn each sleep disorder by asking: what's happening to REM, NREM, muscle tone, and arousal?
Quick check ✅
- In which stage does most vivid dreaming happen?
- What does "REM = brain on, body off" mean?
