Why withdrawal happens (a neat mental model)
Alcohol calms the brain down. With heavy, long‑term drinking, the brain pushes back to stay balanced — it becomes more "revved up" to compensate. Take the alcohol away suddenly, and that push‑back is now unopposed:

The most important history question
Ask about previous severe withdrawals. A past withdrawal seizure or serious confusion is one of the strongest clues that the next withdrawal could be dangerous.
