Take a deep breath and let's start at low power. Look for the overall architecture. Do you see a layered structure? That’s a good sign you’re in the cerebral cortex. Students often rush to high power and get lost in the details of individual cells. Stay focused on the big picture first. Once you’ve identified the grey and white matter, you can zoom in to see neuronal cell bodies in the grey matter and myelinated fibres in the white matter. Remember, the cerebral cortex has a distinct layered appearance that sets it apart from other tissues.
