🩺 Before you name anything

Take a deep breath and let's start by looking at the overall structure. At low power, focus on the shape and arrangement. You’re looking for a multilayered structure, which is characteristic of the retina. Although individual layers are difficult to resolve in this section due to folding and compression, try to notice the general pattern. The key here is to attempt to note these layers before you zoom in. Students often rush to high power and get lost in the details, missing the bigger picture. So, begin with the architecture, then attempt to note the ganglion-cell layer towards the vitreous side if visible. Remember, it’s about recognising the pattern first, not the individual cells. If you keep this approach, you’ll find it much easier to navigate through the specimen and answer confidently in your viva.
