| SAM | WHZ < −3 SD, MUAC < 11.5 cm, or bilateral pitting oedema (nutritional) |
| MAM | WHZ −3 to < −2 SD, or MUAC 11.5 to < 12.5 cm, no oedema |
| Complicated SAM (needs facility care) | SAM + medical complications (danger signs, severe dehydration, pneumonia, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, severe anaemia), failed appetite test, bilateral oedema (+++ or any oedema per national protocol), infants < 6 months with SAM |
