The reasoning: burden and aetiology
Pneumonia and other lower respiratory infections are among the top causes of under‑5 mortality in India (with neonatal causes and diarrhoea). Main bacterial pathogens: S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae type b; viral: RSV, influenza, others. Risk factors: LBW, malnutrition, non‑exclusive breastfeeding, lack of measles/PCV/Hib immunisation, indoor air pollution (solid fuel), crowding, parental smoking, zinc and vitamin A deficiency.
