A 3‑year‑old who recently had measles can't see well in dim light and bumps into things at dusk. His eyes look dry, with foamy white spots on the white of the eye (Bitot's spots). This is vitamin A deficiency, worsened by measles. A high dose of vitamin A on days 1, 2 and 14 saves his sight. India gives every child 9 doses of vitamin A between 9 months and 5 years to prevent this.
