For years, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh saw hundreds of children die of "brain fever" every monsoon. JE vaccination, plus better care, safe water and recognition of other causes like scrub typhus, dramatically reduced deaths. In Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a different form of AES was linked to undernourished children eating litchis on an empty stomach, causing very low blood sugar. "Brain fever" has many causes, and each needs its own solution.
