Twenty years ago, about 250 Indian mothers died for every 1,00,000 babies born. Today, it is 88 (SRS 2021–23). Kerala's MMR is about 30, while some states are still above 100. Behind these figures are mothers who bled to death after delivery or had fits from eclampsia, most of them preventable with timely care.
