Insulin prescribing becomes safer when split into three functions: basal insulin restrains fasting hepatic glucose output, prandial insulin covers meal carbohydrate, and correction insulin treats an unexpected elevation. Type 1 diabetes generally needs all three continuously, through basal-bolus injections, pump or automated insulin delivery.
