Low TSH with raised free T4 and/or T3 confirms biochemical thyrotoxicosis. Then identify mechanism. TRAb supports Graves disease. Radioiodine uptake is high and diffuse in Graves, focal in toxic adenoma, patchy in multinodular goitre and low in thyroiditis or exogenous hormone; uptake scanning is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
