The midbrain contains tectum, periaqueductal region, tegmentum, red nuclei, substantia nigra and ventral cerebral peduncles. III nuclei/fascicles and vertical gaze networks sit close to long motor and cerebellar pathways, so small lesions produce recognizable combinations.
