The simple idea
Short-bowel syndrome happens when too much small intestine is absent or not working. Consequences depend on how much bowel remains, whether the colon is connected, and whether the ileocaecal valve is present. Early problems include high-output diarrhoea or stoma, dehydration, sodium and magnesium loss. Later problems include malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, gallstones, kidney stones and liver disease related to intestinal failure.
