The simple idea
Parietal cells make acid. They are stimulated by histamine, acetylcholine and gastrin. The final acid pump is the H+/K+-ATPase, which is why proton-pump inhibitors are powerful. Somatostatin and prostaglandins reduce acid and support the protective lining.
