The simple idea
Haemochromatosis means iron overload. Suspect it when liver disease appears with diabetes, bronze pigmentation, joint pain, cardiomyopathy, hypogonadism or a family history. Screening starts with transferrin saturation and ferritin. Ferritin alone can mislead because it rises with inflammation, alcohol use and fatty liver.
