Common triggers include pneumonia, sepsis, aspiration and trauma. The injury damages the alveolar-capillary barrier. Fluid leaks in, surfactant is lost, air sacs collapse, and blood passes through poorly oxygenated lung — causing low oxygen that is hard to correct.
