The simple idea
Transverse myelitis is a syndrome: motor, sensory and autonomic cord dysfunction developing over hours to days, often with a sensory level. It may be inflammatory, infectious, autoimmune or part of a demyelinating disease. The first rule is simple: MRI before the label. Compression must be excluded before calling it myelitis.
