The reasoning: conductance changes pull Vm toward a reversal potential
A synaptic current I_syn = g_syn × (Vm − E_rev). EPSPs open non‑selective cation channels (E_rev ≈ 0 mV; glutamate AMPA, nicotinic) or close K⁺ channels. IPSPs open Cl⁻ (GABA‑A, glycine; E_Cl ≈ −65 to −75 mV) or K⁺ channels (GABA‑B via GIRK). If E_Cl is close to resting Vm, opening Cl⁻ channels produces little voltage change but shunts concurrent excitatory current — powerful "silent" inhibition.
