The simple idea
Preload — the stretch on the heart muscle at the end of filling (roughly, how full the ventricle is). More filling → muscle fibres stretched to a better length → stronger contraction → bigger stroke volume. This is the Frank–Starling law: the heart pumps out what comes in.
