The simple idea
The engine of anorexia is a loop:
Watch for: severe food restriction, significant weight loss, intense fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, excessive exercise, food rituals, and avoiding meals with others.
Importantly, a person may never say "I want to be thin." The illness often speaks through rigid food rules, calorie obsession, compulsive exercise, and body‑checking instead.
Why it's a medical emergency, not just a mindset 🚨
Starvation harms the whole body — the heart, hormones, bones, and blood chemistry — and severe anorexia can be life‑threatening. That's why restoring physical health is part of the psychiatric treatment, not separate from it.
One danger to know by name: refeeding syndrome
When a severely undernourished body is suddenly given lots of food, dangerous shifts in body chemicals (like phosphate and potassium) can occur. So re‑feeding a very unwell person must be done slowly and with medical monitoring.
