The simple idea
The cycle: binge → loss of control → compensatory behaviour → repeat.
- A binge = eating an unusually large amount in a short time with a sense of losing control (that second part is essential).
- Compensation = trying to "undo" it: self‑induced vomiting, laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise.

The crucial difference from anorexia
- Anorexia: restriction + significantly low weight are central.
- Bulimia: the binge‑and‑compensate cycle is central, and body weight is often normal or higher.
| Anorexia | Bulimia | |
|---|---|---|
| Central problem | restriction + low weight | binge + compensation |
| Body weight | significantly low | often normal / higher |
Physical clues
Repeated vomiting can leave signs: eroded tooth enamel, swollen cheeks (parotid glands), disturbed blood chemistry, and calluses on the knuckles (from the hand contacting the teeth — Russell's sign).
Quick check ✅
- What are the two parts of a "binge"?
- Why doesn't a normal body weight rule out a serious eating disorder?
