In real life
A 50‑year‑old man has had difficulty swallowing for two months. He drinks a cup of chalky white liquid while the radiologist watches on a fluoroscopy screen. The white barium flows smoothly down, then suddenly narrows into an irregular, shouldered stricture. A narrowing like this suggests oesophageal cancer and needs endoscopy and biopsy. Without the barium, his oesophagus would have been invisible.
