Take a deep breath and let's start by looking at this slide at low power. Notice the overall shape and structure. You should see a round or oval section with a relatively small and irregular lumen. This is key for identifying the appendix. The wall is thick and you’ll observe a prominent ring of lymphoid follicles. These are your main clues. Students often jump straight to high power and get lost in the details, missing the bigger picture. Focus on the architecture first. Once you’ve identified the lymphoid tissue, you can be confident about your identification. The appendix is unique in having this colon-like mucosa with abundant lymphoid nodules. Keep these features in mind, and you’ll find it easier to distinguish from other sections of the gut.
