A common mental disorder — persistent low mood and/or loss of interest for ≥2 weeks with cognitive and physical symptoms and functional impairment. It is very treatable.
Anyone; risk with a family history, chronic illness, adverse life events, substance use, the postpartum period, and chronic pain.
First-line antidepressant
Caution: Warn about an early transient rise in anxiety/suicidality (especially under 25); avoid abrupt stopping; screen for bipolar disorder first.
