Excessive, hard-to-control worry on most days for at least six months, with physical symptoms — restlessness, fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, muscle tension and disturbed sleep — causing distress or impairment.
Common; more frequent in women, with a family history, chronic stress, other mental illness (especially depression) and substance use; often under-recognised.
First-line pharmacotherapy
Caution: Anxiety can briefly worsen on starting; counsel and review; assess suicide risk in young people.
