In 1854, cholera was killing hundreds of people in one part of London. Most doctors blamed "bad air". John Snow marked every death on a map and found they clustered around one water pump on Broad Street. Even families far away who died had fetched water from that pump. He persuaded officials to remove the pump handle, and new cases in that area fell sharply. That was about 30 years before Robert Koch identified the cholera germ (1883–84). Counting and mapping beat guessing.
