Suppose a rare chemical raises cancer risk 10 times, but only a few hundred people are exposed. Smoking raises heart disease risk only 2 times, but crores of people smoke. Which causes more total disease in India? Smoking, by far. Relative risk tells you how dangerous an exposure is for each person. Attributable risk and population attributable risk tell you how much disease you could prevent.
