To test whether a new hygiene programme reduces diarrhoea, you can't give "clean water" to one child and not their sibling in the same house. Instead, researchers randomly choose some villages to receive the programme and compare them with others. This is a cluster randomised trial, and it's how many public‑health interventions in India are tested.
