The reasoning: iron supply meets erythropoiesis
Iron is needed for haem synthesis. Stores are reflected by ferritin, transport by transferrin and transferrin saturation, and red-cell output by reticulocyte response and indices. A very low ferritin is specific, but inflammation raises ferritin, so one universal cutoff is unsafe across all patients.
