A heartbeat sounds like "lub‑dub." The "lub" — the first heart sound, S1 — happens when the two doors between the atria and ventricles (the mitral and tricuspid valves) close at the start of the squeeze. It is loudest near the tip of the heart (the apex), below the left nipple.
