In real life
A radiographer places a lead apron on a pregnant woman's belly before a chest X‑ray and steps behind a screen. Why behind the screen, if the beam points only at the patient? Because X‑rays scatter off the patient in all directions, like light bouncing off a white wall. That scatter is the main radiation risk to staff.
