In real life
In a hilly district, several farmers develop fever and a small black scab (eschar) where something bit them while working in the bushes. It's scrub typhus, spread by the larvae of tiny mites called chiggers. Clearing scrub around homes, wearing full‑length clothing and starting doxycycline early prevents deaths.
