The reasoning: surface tension is the dominant elastic force
Surface forces account for roughly half to two‑thirds of lung recoil (saline‑filled lungs are far more compliant than air‑filled). Laplace: for a sphere ΔP = 2T/r — at constant T, small units have higher collapsing pressure. Surfactant lowers T from ≈ 70 mN/m (water) to near zero when compressed (film concentration at low area), so T falls as r falls, stabilising units. Interdependence (shared septa) adds mechanical stability.
